A Craft, Built in Four Steps

Gather ordinary materials — bone meal, sugar, gunpowder, the things already in your chests. Brew them into reagents at an Athanor. Spend reagents to inscribe spells onto scrolls at a Sigil Desk. Bind the scrolls into a book you carry, so you never have to hunt for the right piece of paper.

That’s the whole loop. Everything in the mod is one of those four things.

The Athanor

The Athanor interface: a three-by-three brewing grid on the left, and a panel on the right listing the eight brews with the selected recipe shown

Copper and brick around a furnace. This is where reagents come from, and the only place they can be made. Put materials in the nine squares and take what forms in the vessel beside them.

Count items, not squares. If a recipe asks for two of something, two in one square works and so does one in each of two. Position never matters. Anything the recipe didn’t ask for stops it.

Eight reagents: Brimstone, Nitre, Gallowsroot, Quicksilver, Theriac, Henbane, Quintessence and Natron. Every recipe yields four, so one brew goes a long way — and brewing costs no experience, ever. Only inscribing does.

The Sigil Desk

The Sigil Desk interface: an eight-slot ring around a central scroll, four catalyst squares below, and a recipe browser listing forty-seven entries

Paper and planks around an ink sac. The Desk turns reagents into scrolls, and it has three parts that refuse to accept each other’s work.

The ring — eight squares around the outside, reagents only. The four small squares below — the rare things: a Ghast Tear, a Rabbit’s Foot, an Eye of Ender. The ring won’t take them and they won’t take reagents. The centre — a Blank Scroll.

Both stations show their own recipe list beside them, so you can page through and see what a spell wants, where each piece goes, and whether you have it.

Your First Spell

A page of the Arcane Codex describing Witchlight: Circle I, one Brimstone and one Quicksilver, needs level 3

Witchlight is the cheapest thing in the mod: one Brimstone, one Quicksilver, a Blank Scroll in the centre, and experience level 3. It costs a single level to inscribe. Hold the scroll, use it, and a cold light settles on the block you’re facing for five minutes.

Casting has weight. First-circle spells leave your hand instantly. Deeper ones make you stand and channel, and taking damage mid-cast loses the words — though never the scroll. After any cast the working has to settle before the next one, for as long as the cast took.

Span

A pale blue conjured walkway extending straight out across a ravine toward the horizon

Thirty-two blocks of conjured walkway, laid straight out in front of you over air or water. It steps over anything already in the way rather than stopping at it, so you can bridge a ravine with a tree growing out of the middle of it.

It fades after ninety seconds, and whatever is standing on it falls. Be across by then.

The Travel Network

A standing gateway of dark stone with pale veins, purple sparks drifting through the opening, in a grass field

Five spells that only make sense together. Mark sets a sigil into any block within sixteen paces — a marked block goes as hard as obsidian, so nobody mines your waypoint out from under you. Recall carries you back to it. Transvection does the same across worlds.

Gate Travel opens a standing door where you are and another wherever you’re bound, and it carries whatever walks in — you, your horse, the creeper following your horse. Waygate opens the same pair and leaves them standing for half an hour.

Bound for good. Recall and Transvection scrolls start unbound; touch one to a marked block and it’s fixed there forever. It keeps working even if someone later breaks the mark, so a stock of bound scrolls runs down as you spend it rather than dying all at once.

The Deep End

Empyrean Fall in progress: dozens of burning impacts scattered across a wide green landscape

Forty spells across eight circles, and the eighth is where the nether stars go. Empyrean Fall calls fire down across a landscape. Consecrated Ground and Sanctuary lay standing wards. Stasis holds what comes near.

Undying is the exception to every rule. Eighth circle, casts in half a second, and nothing can shake it loose — because it exists for the moment you are already being hit. Every other spell in the mod can be interrupted.

Six Ranks of Book

A spellbook holds charges, so you cast without carrying paper. Craft a Commonplace Book, hold it with a scroll in your off hand and sneak-use: the scroll is spent and the book gains a charge. It costs no experience. Sneak-use with an empty off hand to choose a spell, then use the book to cast it — and a charge is only spent when the spell actually takes hold, so an interruption costs you nothing.

Carrying a book helps you even when you aren’t casting: it lends armour and quickens your digging, and from the second rank up it steadies your strike. Books are grown, not replaced — lay the old one in the centre of the Desk with the right offering in the ring and it becomes the next rank, keeping its charges and its author. Six ranks, from the Commonplace Book up to the Magnum Opus.

Two Books That Explain Themselves

  • The Novice’s Primer — 84 pages, handed to you the first time you use an Athanor. It teaches the craft: the loop, the rules of the squares, what settling is, what happens when you die.
  • The Arcane Codex — the reference. Every reagent with its recipe, every spell with its real numbers, every book rank with its stats. It rewrites itself out of the mod’s own registry every time you pick it up, so it physically cannot tell you a number that stopped being true.
